A Personalised, Non-Pharmaceutical Approach to Facial Rejuvenation, Skin Vitality, and Healthy Ageing
Imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a face that appears more rested, refreshed, and alive—while still looking naturally and recognisably like you.
At Mackay Acupuncture Natural Medicine, cosmetic and facial skin acupuncture combines traditional acupuncture, Neoclassical Acupuncture, and LED light therapy into a personalized 60-minute treatment with Dr Laura Bell.
This service appeals to individuals who want to support the appearance, tone, and overall health of their skin without relying on prescription cosmetic injections or deliberately reducing the movement of their facial muscles.
It is important to note that this treatment is not intended to reproduce the effect of injectable wrinkle treatments. Instead, our focus is on supporting natural facial expression, releasing facial tension, and taking a holistic, whole-person view of your skin, health, and general well-being.
What May Be Included in Your Treatment?
The treatment is not confined to simply placing needles into lines or areas of localized concern. Utilizing Neoclassical Acupuncture, Dr Laura Bell assesses the body as a whole, taking into account broader patterns of tension, stress, and internal health that directly influence how your skin presents.
Depending on your individual presentation and goals, each 60-minute session may include:
- Cosmetic facial acupuncture tailored to your skin’s needs
- Individualised body acupuncture to address underlying constitutional balance
- Neoclassical Acupuncture assessment and point selection
- LED light therapy (photobiomodulation)
- Targeted facial massage to ease expression-related tightness
- Customized techniques chosen specifically for your skin vitality goals
Note on Evidence: Research into cosmetic acupuncture remains ongoing and limited. While small preliminary studies have investigated its potential effects on facial appearance and elasticity, current available evidence is not strong enough to claim guaranteed wrinkle removal or specific cosmetic results.
What Facial & Skin Concerns May Be Discussed?
People seek cosmetic and facial skin acupuncture for a variety of cosmetic and functional reasons, including:
- Fine lines, wrinkles, and visible signs of skin ageing
- Dull, tired, or fatigued-looking skin
- Uneven skin tone or irregular texture
- Facial puffiness and fluid retention
- Tension held in the forehead, temple, or around the eyes
- Jaw tightness, clenching, and TMJ-related facial stress
- Reduced facial tone, laxity, or loss of firmness
- Blemish-prone or acne-prone skin
- Redness, reactivity, or heightened skin sensitivity
- Overall facial vitality, glow, and healthy ageing
- A strong desire to maintain natural facial movement and expression
- Cerebral palsy
Clinical Note: The suitability of acupuncture depends on your specific skin presentation. Persistent acne, severe inflammation, active infections, changing skin lesions, or unexplained sudden skin changes require prior medical assessment by a GP or dermatologist.
How Does LED Light Therapy Fit In?
LED light therapy—also known as photobiomodulation—uses selected wavelengths of non-thermal light energy.
Clinical studies using specific red and near-infrared treatment protocols have reported positive changes in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin elasticity. However, results depend heavily on the device, wavelength, treatment dose, frequency, and individual biology; findings from one device cannot automatically be applied to every LED unit or patient.
At Mackay Acupuncture Natural Medicine, LED light therapy is used alongside facial and body acupuncture as a supportive component of a broader treatment plan, rather than as a stand-alone promise of dramatic skin transformation.
A Natural Alternative to Prescription Cosmetic Injections
Prescription muscle-relaxing cosmetic injections operate by reducing selected facial muscle activity. This temporarily softens movement-related lines, particularly around the forehead, glabella (frown lines), and eyes.
While widely used and generally tolerated when administered correctly by qualified healthcare professionals, injectable pharmaceuticals are not free from potential adverse effects. We believe in providing complete information so you can make an empowered choice for your skin.
Recognized Short-Term Effects
Official prescribing information lists several possible side effects:
- Injection-site pain, swelling, or localized bruising
- Headaches and localized facial pain
- Temporary facial weakness or asymmetry
- Drooping eyelids (ptosis) or brow drooping
- Eyelid swelling, dry eyes, or ocular irritation
- Weakness of nearby non-targeted muscles
In cosmetic clinical trials for one widely used product, headaches occurred in approximately 9% of participants following forehead treatment, brow drooping in ~2%, eyelid drooping in ~3% following glabella treatment, and eyelid swelling in ~1% following eye treatment.
Rare but Serious Systemic Effects
Official product warnings highlight that toxin effects can occasionally spread beyond the intended injection area. Reported symptoms include generalized weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, altered speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing.
- Swallowing or breathing difficulties can be life-threatening and require urgent medical attention regardless of the dose or indication.
- Cardiovascular events, including cardiac rhythm disturbances and heart attacks (some fatal), have also been voluntarily reported post-marketing. While a direct causal link is not proven and some individuals had pre-existing risk factors, these events remain part of official safety monitoring.
Considerations for Repeated Long-Term Use
Repeated injections intentionally reduce nerve stimulation and muscle movement. Over time, muscle thinning or atrophy can occur.
- Evidence on Decades of Use: Available research on repeated cosmetic injections over many years remains incomplete. A review of 22 publications showed that few studies track participants beyond six months. Some reported long-lasting changes in muscle composition and function, but there is insufficient high-quality data to define the structural consequences over several decades.
- Antibody Resistance: Neutralising antibodies may occasionally develop, reducing the cosmetic response to future injections. Large analyses report antibody development in approximately 0.5% of evaluable participants across therapeutic and aesthetic uses.
Remaining Naturally Expressive
Cosmetic acupuncture offers a completely different philosophy. It does not paralyse facial muscles, nor should it be expected to produce the rapid, frozen, or predictable line-erasing effects of pharmaceutical injections.
Instead, cosmetic acupuncture is chosen by individuals who value:
- Preserving natural facial movement and genuine expression
- A 100% non-pharmaceutical, non-toxic approach
- A whole-person assessment that supports overall well-being
- A gradual, cumulative treatment process
- Targeted relief for held facial tension and improved skin vitality
- Rejuvenation that looks naturally and authentically like them
Our Recommended 12-Treatment Course
Because natural skin rejuvenation relies on physiological building blocks and cumulative response, we recommend a structured program where clinically appropriate:
- Initial Phase: Two 60-minute treatments each week for 5 weeks (10 sessions)
- Consolidation Phase: Two weekly consolidation treatments (2 sessions)
- Maintenance Phase: Ongoing maintenance appointments spaced according to individual response, lifestyle, and goals
Twelve treatments form our standard complete program, though recommendations are confirmed after your initial assessment and adjusted as needed. No specific cosmetic outcome can be guaranteed.
Getting Started: Before your first appointment, you will complete a comprehensive online facial and health assessment. This allows us to devote more of your in-clinic appointment time directly to examination and hands-on treatment.
